The 150th Open Championship is set to spark into life this week as golf’s greatest battle it out at the historic St Andrews.

All eyes will be on the Old Course’s 1st tee at 6:45am on Thursday morning as the landmark Major gets up and running.

There are a host of top names in contention this week with the legendary Tiger Woods leading a stellar field for the biggest tournament in golf.

The Old Course is a fitting venue for a championship of such magnitude but who will lift the Claret Jug aloft come Sunday evening?

The field will be made up of 156 players before the cut on Friday night.

Woods will play the opening two rounds with Matt Fitzpatrick, fresh from his incredible win at the US Open, and Max Homa in an exciting group.

Reigning Gold Medal winner Collin Morikawa will start his defence alongside Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele while Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm will also be together.

As well as Woods, a number of other former champions will be in action including Darren Clarke, Ernie Els and John Daly.

LIV Golf defectors such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau will tee it up too.

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie, winner of the 1999 Open, will have the honour of hitting the first tee shot on Thursday morning.

Lawrie insists he will have no problems being ready to fulfil his 6:35am role – as he will have been up early to answer the call of nature anyway.

“I’m 53 so I’m wide awake at 4.30-5am having a pee so it shouldn’t be a problem,” he joked.

“I’m always nervous on the first tee, no matter what tournament I’m playing in, but obviously there will be a little bit more pressure as it’s The Open and the 150th.

“But luckily it’s a nice big, wide fairway – although I could miss any fairway how wide it is.”
